Activate Aurora is an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) funded cross-sectorial program designed to make Aurora Canada’s Most Active Community. Designed by Sport Aurora with the guidance of the Canadian Sport for Life Society and endorsed by the Mayor’s Task Force on Physical Activity, this program is uniting the community to come together and become more active on a daily basis.
Childhood obesity, Type-2 diabetes, and the negative physical, emotional and social outcomes which follows is now one of our most challenging and significant health problems. Statistics Canada in 2006 has projected that for the first time in history, a child born in that year would have a shorter lifespan than his/her parents. The problem isn’t just with kids. Inactivity and poor diets result in health problems in adults, which cause escalating health care costs due to largely preventable diseases.

A cross-sectorial problem such as this requires a cross-sectorial solution. For the first time these important sectors – education, health care, sport and recreation – are working together to solve a problem. The Mayor’s Task Force on Physical Activity endorses this project, and has provided in-kind funding and political will so that professionals are able to work with our volunteers to deliver our programs in schools and the community.
